Support Gay Pride With Limited PS4 ‘Gaystation’, Proceeds Go To LGBT Charity

For the last five years or so, support for the LGBT community has amplified, surpassing barriers that existed in the past. Companies that people wouldn’t have thought would support gay pride – showed their support by making “gay pride” versions of their products. A prime example would be when Burger King made the “Proud Whopper,” which is a regular Whopper wrapped around rainbow foil. Some show their support by sponsoring gay events. The United Church of Christ is an example to this by being the first religious sponsor the Gay Games ever had.

Now there are reports that shows that Sony might be the next company to support gay pride. How? There was a limited edition PlayStation 4 supporting gay pride up for auction and proceeds are going to a LGBT charity.

According to IGN, Swedish retailer Webhallen sold the console for 28,30o Swedish kroner. The U.S. dollar equivalent is about $4,118, and it all went to RFSL, a charity dedicated to supporting the LGBT community. Because of the amount it was sold for, the charity event was considered a success, especially since PS4 consoles retail for about $400 in stores. Someone spending the equivalent of more than ten PS4 consoles for charity is considered a victory. As for the PlayStation 4, the special edition was given the moniker of “GayStation.” It was designed after the LGBT’s rainbow flag with a large pixel-drawn heart in the center of the console’s top (if it were to lay horizontally).

In another article by Segment Next, they report the funds from the GayStation 4 auction will go specifically to RFSL newcomers. The video game store, Webhallen, made a statement in accordance to gaming and gay gamers:

“For many young people, the world of games will become a refuge to escape the taunting or worse of real life. ON Webhallen, we are gamers in heart and mind, and are keen that as many as possible have the opportunity to feel welcome and enjoy the world’s largets and fasted growing interest: video games.”

Unfortunately for other gay gamers, there is no indication that the GayStation will be made widely available for retail. This shall surely annoy some of the people who want that cosmetic style for their PS4 instead of the traditional black. However, that doesn’t mean it won’t ever be available for sale. Originally, the white PS4 was supposed to be exclusive to Japanese gamers, but now it will be part of the bundle which includes the game Destiny.

Now we would like to hear from you. What do you think about the GayStation 4? Do you think the special edition console would sell well where you live, if it were to be made available on the market? Let us know in the comments below.
