Twain Harte Lake Drained, Closed Until Further Notice

Twain Harte Lake was drained to relieve stress on a leaking dam. Additionally, California officials have closed access to the park “until further notice.” On August 3, authorities discovered several cracks in and around the Twain Harte Lake Dam. Although the dam’s infrastructure remains intact, the lake was drained as a precaution.

Officials believe the damage occurred at approximately 10:30 am on Sunday. As reported by KCRA News, numerous witnesses reported hearing a loud “explosion” near the dam. Denis Wyckoff, who manages the park and resort, describes the scene:

“It sounded like dynamite coming from down in the canyon. I looked and at first I thought it was steam rising, then I realized it was dust.”

Although the specific cause of the explosion is unknown, officials do not believe it was an act of terrorism.

Following the blast, authorities closed access to Twain Harte Lake. It is unclear how long the recreational area will remain closed. However, officials want to ensure visitors and residents are safe.

Tuolumne County Sheriff Jim Mele confirmed there is no “imminent structure failure,” but state inspectors are still in the process of assessing the damage.

County administrator Craig Pedro said the entire site is being monitored for additional cracks and damage. Markers were placed along the dam and surrounding rock to record any further explosions or movement.

A sewer line, which runs along the dam, is a specific concern. Pedro said the sewer line was temporarily bypassed to prevent a rupture.

Twain Harte Lake is a “private, members only lake,” which is managed by the Twain Harte Lake Association. Prospective members must own real estate along the lake and formally apply for membership.

According to the association’s guidelines, the application fee is $5000 and yearly dues are $275. The yearly dues cover a predefined number of “admission credits,” which are used to gain access to the lake and recreation area.

As membership is limited to 100 admissions, the association has a lengthy waiting list. Although the park is not open to the general public, members are allowed to bring guests — with prior permission.

Although the membership process is somewhat complicated, and pricy, members believe the resort and lake are worth it. Unfortunately, the lake will remain closed for an undetermined period of time.

It is unclear whether the lake will reopen before the end of the season. Officials are currently assessing prior, and continuing, damage to the Twain Harte Lake Dam and surrounding area.
