Michael Dunn Reappears in Court in Preparation for September Trial

Michael Dunn, 47, returned to court on Monday for a pretrial hearing regarding the shooting of 17-year-old Jordan Davis in November 2012. After the first mistrial in February for first-degree murder, Dunn’s second trial has been scheduled for September 22.

The shooting of Jordan Davis took place on Friday, November 23, 2012, around 7:30 pm in Florida. Dunn and Davis had a dispute over the loud music coming from a vehicle, and as a result, Dunn shot Davis with a handgun in his glove compartment, hitting him in the lungs, legs, and aorta. While Dunn claims that Davis had a shotgun, police found no evidence of weapons at the scene. Dunn proceeded to try and return home, but was arrested at his home in Satellite Beach the following day for three counts of attempted murder, one count of firing into a vehicle, and one count of first-degree murder.

As The Inquisitr reported earlier, Dunn’s neighbor Charles Hendrix said Dunn declared, “I can’t wait for somebody to try something with me when I have my gun!” Hendrix believed that Dunn expressed a desire to shoot someone, and that he held racist views toward minority groups.

According to another report by The Inquisitr, Dunn claims he was the victim in the shooting. “I’m the f**king victim here, I was the one who was victimized,” Michael Dunn said in a phone call from jail in December of 2012. “I mean I don’t know how else to cut it, like they attacked me, I’m the victim. I’m the victor, but I was the victim too.”

Dunn maintains his defense that Davis threatened him with a shotgun, justifying his own actions as self-defense. While Dunn has already been convicted of three counts of attempted murder, he still awaits his trial of the more serious charge of first-degree murder. The trial is expected to take two weeks, unless another mistrial is declared.

The prosecution and defense had no disagreements during the hearing, but did exchange public materials in preparation for the trial. The next hearing is scheduled for August 25, at which point, some issues may arise for the judge to deal with.

Dunn is already facing 75 years in prison for three counts of attempted murder and one count of firing into a vehicle. He may face life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted of first-degree murder.
