Papa John’s Gives The World A Spicy Pulled Pork Pizza

Papa John’s is giving the world something they didn’t know they always wanted; a pulled pork pizza. You’re extremely welcome. We think.

If you haven’t already felt a bit queasy at the thought of such an odd concoction, chances are you’re looking up the nearest Papa John’s location online. While this writer loves pizza and pulled pork, this combination does seem a little strange and certainly unexpected. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean I wouldn’t stuff a few slices down the ol’ gastrointestinal hatch. No joke.

According to Food Beast, Papa John’s recently unveiled their so-called Spicy Pulled Pork Pizza. Unfortunately for those who would love to serve such a dish during this year’s Thanksgiving dinner, the restaurant is only offering said pie for a limited time. In fact, Papa John’s will yank the item from its menus on August 24.

Here’s how the website describes the pizza:

“The new Spicy Pulled Pork Pizza features pulled pork, a blend of pepperjack and mozzarella cheeses, sweet “Kansas-style” barbecue sauce, and crushed red pepper flakes. Reminiscent of summer barbecues, it sounds like this new pie will be more of a smoky, sweet, spicy pizza.”

Fortunately for those who wouldn’t mind sinking their teeth into a pulled pork pizza, Papa John’s isn’t charging an arm and a leg for the pie. Brand Eating points out that a large Spicy Pulled Pork Pizza will only set you back around $12 — before taxes and delivery charges are figured into the price, that is.

Not surprisingly, Papa John’s is pretty excited to share the new pie with the world. Bob Kraut, the company’s chief marketing officer, thinks it’s the perfect addition to anyone’s summer vacation. In his opinion, of course.

“Along with vacations and long days at the pool or beach, one of the most popular traditions of summer is to gather friends and family and have a good old fashioned backyard barbecue. We’re celebrating the summer barbecue with our Spicy Pulled Pork pizza, which, just like the traditional barbecue, can be enjoyed by a gathering of family and friends, and you won’t have to fire up the grill.”

If you’re seriously repulsed by Papa John’s latest offering, you’re not the only one. The Consumerist contributor Laura Northrup doesn’t seem at all impressed with the pie. While Food Beast offered a very diplomatic description of the pizza, Northrup is definitely a bit more blunt in her assessment of the product.

Observe:

“Papa John’s is taking what we can only assume is mediocre pulled pork and slathering it on their bland, salty pizza. Well, that isn’t fair. I am not a particular fan of Papa John’s, but clearly a lot of people like or at least tolerate their pizza.”

The question remains: Is this thing actually any good? YouTuber TheEndorsement seems to think Papa John’s’ latest concoction isn’t too bad. Not only can you definitely taste the pulled pork, he said it’s actually got a bit of spicy kick. All in all, the guy seemed impressed by the pizza. Check out the review below.
