Rags to Riches: Dog Who Walked 30 Miles To Be Turned Away By Owners, Sent To Pound, Moves In With Heiress

The Inquisitr recently reported on Ma Kettle, the elderly black Labrador who walked 30 miles to return to her Sedan, Kansas, home only to be turned away by her previous owners. Ma Kettle’s story quickly went viral with people from across the country trying to find her a forever home.

Fortunately for the loyal dog her forever home turned out to be with Helen Rich, the Wrigley Gum heiress. Rich is an avid animal lover and operates her own animal sanctuary in Florida called On the Wings of Angels Rescue, and has 70 rescue dogs, cats, cattle, horses, goats, rabbits, pigs, and exotic birds in custom-designed quarters on a large tract of land in Odessa, Florida.

According to the Tampa Tribune, not only is Ma Kettle–who is now being called Lady–going to a new home, she’s going to go in style. Rich sent a private jet to fetch Lady from the Sedan shelter.

Lady has had a rough start, but fortunately for the aging dog, Rich had decided to make Lady a personal pet. Though Rich owns the animal refuge center, Lady will be living side-by-side with Rich in her sprawling Odessa home.

According to KWCH News, Rich sent her personal assistant Chet Ragsdale to pick up Lady personally. Chet then rode back with Lady on the private jet. Ragsdale said,

“She going to think she’s gone to heaven.”

The Tampa Tribune noted how fast the heiress worked to secure Lady a home. Rich contacted her staff to rescue the dog from the Chautauqua County Animal Shelter in Sedan, Kansas. At 4 pm Thursday, her assistants, Chet Ragsdale and Barbara DiCioccio, boarded a jet to Kansas to pick up the dog; they returned about 10 pm. DiCioccia said,

“We don’t mess around here. We get things done.”

Since Lady will be a personal pet to Rich, she will have a spot in Rosburg’s 11,000-square-foot, three-story Odessa home with five other dogs and a number of cats, DiCioccio said.

“The dog will be right there where she is. We already have a bed for her.”

This is truly a rags to riches story for Ma Kettle/ Lady, and I am sure Rich will give her the forever home that she deserves since it is widely known that Rich has a soft spot for rescue animals. DiCioccia said, “That’s the reason I like working for her. I see all the good she does,” and Rich definitely did some good for Lady who will now be able to live out the remainder of her life in style.
