You Won’t Believe The Gruesome Discovery A Woman Found Inside 80 IKEA Bags

IKEA is well known as the go-to place for affordable, simplistic and trendy furniture, and their iconic blue and yellow recyclable bags are very easily recognizable worldwide. But when a woman in Sweden found a bunch of the blue IKEA bags under a tarp inside a local church, she was shocked to find them stuffed with over 80 human skeletons.

According to a post in the Gawker, the human remains had been stored at the church since 2009, after being excavated during a renovation to make the church wheelchair accessible. It was during the construction that the human remains were stored in the IKEA bags and have remained that way for five years. The woman who discovered them, Kicki Karlen of Klackeberga, Sweden, was furious when she found the IKEA bags. According to The Local, an english-language Swedish newspaper, Karlen detailed her gruesome discovery.

“There were loads of skulls and bones stuffed into IKEA bags. I counted up to 80. I became angry, very angry about how they were just sitting there. I spoke with some people from the parish who said the bones had been there since 2009.”

In a report published in the Las Vegas Review Journal, some of the bones are a half-century old. It had always been the church’s desire to re-bury the remains, but for one reason or another, they were never re-interred. Archaeologist Ludvig Papmehl-Dufay, who oversaw the remains removal during the renovations, explained what happened to The Local.

“Our mission was to document and rebury the bones, which may be as much as 500 years old. But the reburial was delayed and I have no idea why. The plan was to rebury them as soon as possible, but that’s up to the church. The county board said they couldn’t leave church ground, and it became complicated.”

Papmehl-Dufay had good things to say about the quality and durability of the IKEA bags used in the storage of the remains. The archaeologist said the bags aided in stopping the molding process of the remains.

One thing is for certain: the IKEA bags were used solely as a temporary storage for the human remains, and not as a means for their demise. A new IKEA store will enter the Las Vegas market in the summer of 2016, as reported here on The Inquisitr, and the Swedish-based company continues to expand with over 358 stores in 44 countries. As of this writing, human remains cannot be purchased at your local IKEA, but if you are in the market for easy-to-assemble shelving or decorative furniture, the swedish-based store has you covered.
