Britain’s Chambers Dictionary Officially Redefines Marriage As ‘Gender Neutral’

For those who grew up in a time sans the internet, the primary source one would go to for word spelling and definitions was a dictionary. Thanks to the internet, dictionaries are unknown tools to many of our younger generations, especially now that anyone could use Google, Bing, or Yahoo to find the correct spelling or the definition of a word. However, dictionaries are still being made, and according to reports, the newest edition of the Chambers Dictionary will now be gender neutral.

The gender neutral move for dictionaries is actually a victory for supporters of gay rights and same-sex marriage. Here on The Inquisitr, we reported numerous times on this situation. This includes “Christian” singer Demi Lovato supporting gay marriage and European court rulings that gay marriage has no human right. However, the gender-neutral move is more of a culture change which expresses that acceptance of homosexual relationships.

According to an initial report by the Christian Institute through Christian News Network, three words have been redefined in the 13th edition of the Chambers Dictionary. The institution of marriage is now described as, “the ceremony, act, or contract by which two people become married to each other.” Husband is now defined as “a man to whom someone is married” and wife is “a woman to whom someone is married.” Other words and phrases have been added too such as “sexting” and, believe it or not, “YOLO”.

The reason for the changes in the Chambers Dictionary is by the policy Chambers made for the dictionary itself. Words must demonstrate a lasting influence on a language to avoid short-lived or faddy expressions being admitted.

In a follow-up report by Charisma News, there was another dictionary that went the route of catering to same-sex couples. The Macmillan Dictionary did this by redefining the world “marriage” back in August of last year. Their definition is now “the relationship between two people who are husband and wife, or a similar relationship between people of the same sex.” Macmillan’s editor-in-chief said the organization was monitoring changes to the use of “husband” and “wife” to see if it would change those words too. Why? Michael Rundell, one of the dictionary’s editors had the following to say about it:

“In a same-sex relationship, two men are probably not going to refer to themselves as ‘wife’, but if it’s two women, they might, so we need to keep an eye on that.”
