If the release of the 50 Shades of Grey movie trailer is any indication, February, 2015 is going to be a boon month for sex toy sales. A spokesperson for the UK based shopping website, VoucherCodesPro, told The Metro that searches for erotic items increased by an astounding 53% on the site after the release of the steamy 50 Shades trailer on July 24.

The Daily Star reported the sex toy purchases aren't just confined to women who have read the steamy novels either; more men than ever are purchasing items such as lubricants and stamina pumps to spice up their play in the bedroom. Erotic accessory retailers in general are reporting record sales in sexual aids and toys.

According to Women's Health Magazine, bondage items and erotic toy sales have increased in record numbers since the 50 Shades of Grey series was captured the imagination of millions of women (and quite a few men) in 2011. Sales of riding crops, handcuffs, and other erotic items used by the book's characters in their kinky sex play have more than doubled.

Our fascination with BSDM and kinky sex has been dubbed the 50 Shades of Grey Effect by popular media, and sex toy sales aren't the only aspects of our sex lives the 50 Shades effect has influenced. In a survey reported by Women's Health, more than half of women in a relationship have starred in their own erotic home movie and over one third have had sex in a public place.

Erotic toy companies are riding the wave of the sexual experimentation the 50 Shades books and movie have sparked. LELO, a popular luxury sex toy retailer in the U.S. sees the connection between the popluar 50 Shades trilogy and the increase of erotic purchases and experimentation in the bedroom. "Attitudes towards sex have without a doubt changed as a result of the Fifty shades phenomenon. People are more curious, exploring more and talking more with their partner about the things they can do to increase intimacy and sexual satisfaction," LELO's Head of Marketing, Steve Thompson said in a press release.

Lovehoney, the UK based online erotic toy retailer, is banking on the movie's release to pique the interest of even more people in spicing up their sex lives. In 2012, Lovehoney partnered with 50 Shades author, E.L. James, to release a line of erotic toys based on the popular books. The 'Fifty Shades of Grey' line includes toys used by the book's characters in their kinky play, with names such as the "All Mine Deluxe Blackout Blindfold" and "Please, Sir Flogger." It has been reported that the company also plans to coordinate the release of additional 50 Shades toys with the Valentine's Day premier of the steamy movie.
