Katy Perry was one of the millions of people around the world shocked when the controversial cover art for the highly-anticipated Nicki Minaj single, “Anaconda” was first leaked online. Just like most of them, Katy Perry decided to use her Twitter account to talk about it almost immediately. Connecting to each of her 54.7 million followers, Katy Perry shared her initial reaction within a tweet that simply said:
That’s right! Katy Perry clearly does not have a problem with this NSFW cover art. As you can see from reading her short yet profound statement, she enjoys the picture very much, especially for what seems to be the main focal point of the photo. This honest reaction from Katy Perry was definitely appreciated by Nicki Minaj, who re-tweeted how Katy Perry reacted on her own official Twitter account along with a hilarious comment:
What Katy Perry said in her tweet should not really surprise you or anyone else for that matter. Why not?
Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj are good friends, especially since Nicki was featured on Katy’s 2010 hit single, “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” (hint hint). Katy rose to fame with her own controversial “art” – an international hit known as “I Kissed a Girl” (hint hint). It’s Katy Perry for crying out loud!!
Katy Perry is definitely not the only person that is taking the controversial discussions and reactions revolving around Nicki Minaj and her revealing cover art lightly. There are even people that have already created fan-made artwork, parodies and even merchandise featuring this racy artwork.
The question that should be asked is, “Why is anyone surprised about Nicki Minaj and this revealing photo?” Or better yet, “Why would anyone expect Nicki to apologize or feel bad about the backlash?” Perhaps those tough critics were not listening closely enough to the subtle hints that she included within her acceptance speech at the 2014 BET Awards when she accepted the Best Female Rapper award:
It made me realize I don’t care what anybody gotta say. I’ma do me, I’ma do me.
Just like no one should be surprised about Nicki Minaj, no one should be surprised about Katy Perry either. As mentioned earlier, it’s Katy Perry for crying out loud! Millions of people around the world have become loyal fans of Katy Perry over the years primarily because of the fact that she doesn’t care what people say about her. Katy is also willing to publicly support anyone else that enjoys the freedom of creative liberties just as much as she does – which is why Perry had no problem with posting her reaction to the “Anaconda” cover. The bottom line is that controversial album covers have been released by artists for decades. Nicki Minaj is not the first and will not be the last. Maybe Katy Perry had no problem with this cover art because she understands that crystal clear point.
The only remaining question, then, is “Do YOU?”
