Cameron Diaz: Radio Interview Goes Awry, Pal Drew Barrymore Off Limits

For Cameron Diaz, friendship comes first.

On Monday, Cameron abruptly left a radio interview after the host made unflattering comments about Cameron’s bestie, Drew Barrymore.

Cameron and Jason Segel were chatting with KIIS 106.5 hosts Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O to promote the new movie Sex Tape. The conversation turned to a child actress in the movie, Giselle Eisenberg, when everything started to go awry.

Jackie O compared Giselle to a younger Drew Barrymore, in her role as Gertie in 1982’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Kyle Sandilands then went on to remind listeners of Drew Barrymore’s troubled past.

“Let’s hope she misses out on the Drew Barrymore drug years, because those were a great thing to watch, but not so good to be in, I’d imagine,” he said.

Perhaps realizing that Kyle had made a misstep, Jackie O tried to laugh off the comment. But Cameron was already on the offensive, saying:

“I’m sure, Kyle, you’ve never been through a drug phase, have you? Or alcoholism or anything like that? Pretty clean; always did it right? Congratulations”.

The interview continued to go off the rails, as Kyle brings up Cameron’s boyfriend, Benji Madden.

Cameron abruptly said,”We’re having to go now. Sorry, they’re wrapping us up”.

The call goes quiet then Jackie O started laying into her co-host:

“Well, that started very well and ended poorly, I think. Good one, Kyle. You ruined that interview. Sorry to be blunt. You brought up Drew Barrymore, her best friend’s drug addiction in the past… She’s her best friend. And then you brought up Benji. We all know how protective Cameron is about her private life”.

Cameron and Drew have been inseparable since their days starring in the Charlie’s Angels movies in the early 2000s. Recently the pair has fought off suggestions that they used to have a romantic relationship. In the latest issue of Harper’s Bazaar, Cameron dispels the rumor:

“Some media outlet called for a comment, and they wanted to know whether I was with Drew. Literally, I said, ‘That makes me want to vomit in my mouth.’ That’s like saying I’m having sex with my sister. Are you crazy? I wouldn’t even menage with her!”.

Drew also spoke to Harper’s for the interview, saying “family has always been [Cameron’s] priority and loyalty, and friends have always been most important to her”.
