Shakira’s Facebook Page ‘Likes’: Colombian Siren Tops 100 Million

Shakira is now Facebook’s top celebrity, as the Colombian singer’s page tops over 100 million likes.

In an email to the Wall Street Journal, Shakira said the 100 million fans is “an unfathomable number… something I never necessarily anticipated but a really welcoming and heartwarming surprise.”

To mark the accomplishment, Shakira posted a video to Facebook to thank fans.

Shakira’s new bragging right comes after Sunday’s performance at the 2014 World Cup closing ceremonies in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Her song “Waka, Waka (This Time For Africa)” was the official song of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Shakira’s marketing team clearly understand the importance of this global audience. According to The Wall Street Journal, “Shakira’s social-media team posts in English, Spanish, German, French, Russian and other languages.” The singer’s Colombian and Lebanese heritage help boost her popularity in South America and the Middle East.

The secret of Shakira’s social media success may be her personalized content. Numerous posts are signed by “Shak,” indicating that Shakira authored the post herself. The pop singer also shares personal moments from her life with partner Gerard Pique and son, Milan.

The Wall Street Journal has broken down Shakira’s marketing coup. According to their numbers, Shakira’s rise to the top of Facebook took five years. In all, her 100 million fans represent about 8 per cent of Facebook’s monthly active users. Only about 11 per cent of Shakira’s fans are based in the US.

Shakira’s Facebook likes could earn her some big bucks. The Wall Street Journal lists off how her page is monetized:

“[It] links to iTunes, where fans can buy her music and videos, to her own website where they can buy merchandise, and to other sites where they can buy items such as her perfume. She can post her videos and promote TV appearances such as her role on The Voice“.

The website Fan Page List tracks the popularity of celebrities on Facebook. Their number shows that Shakira is at least 8 million fans ahead of the next celebrity on the list, soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo. Rounding out the top five celebrities on Facebook: Eminem in third place, Rihanna in fourth, and Vin Diesel in fifth.
