‘Epic Rap Battles Of History’ Pit ‘Artists Vs TMNT’ [Video]

Epic Rap Battles of History is a long running YouTube phenomenon which pits similar characters or historical figures against each other in a war of wits. Superman and Goku were one of the most recent hits in the series, with guest stars ranging from relative unknowns to Ray William Johnson and “Weird” Al Yankovic.

It could be said that if you or your characters have been portrayed in an “Epic Rap Battle,” you have officially made it as an icon. Unlike ScrewAttack’s Death Battle series, there are no actual fisticuffs involved. All beatings are given through the lyrics and mean glares.

This round of Epic Rap Battles of History surrounds the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the artists they were named after. This could seem one-sided, with the TMNT having had a cameo from Vanilla Ice in his prime performing an on-screen variation on “Ninja Rap.” Eastman and Laird’s Turtles were first popular back when rap was still relatively clean when it hit the charts, and as such became an instant success.

Playing the roles of the artists Leonardo, Donnatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael in the “Artists Vs TMNT” episode are the YouTube superstars from Smosh (Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox), and Rhett and Link’s Rhett McLaughlin and Link Neal. When it comes to internet celebrity, it’s tough to get bigger than those four without dating a Kardashian or starring in a superhero movie. The Turtles are voiced by Nice Peter and EpicLloyd, the creators of the series.

The artists poke fun at the Turtles by ripping on the sewers they live in as well as the weird fact that they’ve never heard of the artists they’re named after. They also throw in their scientific achievements as a put-down. The Turtles respond with slams centering on their ninja weapons and Da Vinci’s not quite workable flying machine. It seems the artists simply had more to work with.
