Nintendo has announced a Super Smash Bros. 3DS tournament to be held during the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con. This is the second official Nintendo sponsored tournament event after the Smash Invitational held at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles during the week of E3.
The Super Smash Bros. 3DS tournament will be the first major multiplayer showing for the forthcoming brawler. The previous Smash Invitational was held using the Wii U version of the game, but the handheld version of the fighting game will be the star of the show. And as Gameranx noted, the tournament is open to all rather than a selected group of combatants.
The official press release reads as:
“Nintendo will be hosting its first-ever tournament for the Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS game at San Diego Comic-Con on July 25. Fans are invited to come to the Nintendo Gaming Lounge at the Marriott Marquis & Marina located at 333 W. Harbor Drive (adjacent to the San Diego Convention Center) for a chance to participate.
“Starting at noon, there will be a preliminary round in which groups of four competitors battle it out, with the winner advancing. During the finals, players will duke it out one-on-one to determine the top smasher. Tournament slots are limited, and fans will be able to sign up the day of the event on a first-come, first-served basis.
“For fans not able to attend San Diego Comic-Con, tournament action will be streamed live on Nintendo’s Twitch channel at http://www.twitch.tv/Nintendo. Additional Nintendo Gaming Lounge activities will be announced in the future.”
In related news, the MiiVerse feed for Super Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai revealed a few new details about the game including two new outfits for Samus and Mario. Samus’ outfit looks for inspiration from the Star Wars storm trooper as jokingly mentioned by Sakurai in the MiiVerse Post. Mario will be sporting a patriotic outfit for the United States from the title Family Computer Golf: U.S. Course or more the more well known title, NES Open Tournament Golf.
The Super Smash Bros. Tournament 3DS tournament is another great way for Nintendo to market the game which is due to release on October 3. The Wii U version of Super Smash Bros. is slated for a winter 2014-2015 release window.
