‘American Gladiators’ To Get Modernized Reboot

The American Gladiators TV show in the 90s was quite the over the top game show, but now it’s getting a gritty reboot.

The original show featured over-muscled athletes with perfect hair and rippling physiques facing off against relatively thin “average” people in a battlefield composed of practically Nerf level weapons and obstacles. The opponents were always dressed in snappy red, white, and blue gym wear and the lights consistently showed off the glamorous side of it all. It was a hit until we became tired of it.

The new series is giving the concept a much darker feel. Gone (?) are the gym clothes and well lit arenas, but the muscular athletes still await a challenge. We imagine the Nerf style weapons and obstacles will still be the rule for safety reasons, but other than that the producers are looking to change the look entirely.

Arthur Smith, the man who brought us the Gordon Ramsay cooking vehicles Kitchen Nightmares and Hell’s Kitchen, is behind this gritty reboot to American Gladiators. He also brought us American Ninja Warrior, which could be an indication of what we can expect from this rebooted game show.

The show was rebooted back in 2008 with Hulk Hogan and Laila Ali, but it wasn’t nearly as successful as its glitzy and super colorful original. We genuinely liked the original series when it was still new, but our tastes have changed. We aren’t going to be impressed with the glamorous style of the 90s any more, so it seems a new series with a grittier new look might catch our attention again, as long as it keeps a momentum going.

Could we be getting something more on the level of the Arnold Schwarzenegger classic The Running Man without the spandex? Could the next series look more like a WWE main event in plain clothes?

The series has been created, but they have yet to find a network which will take it. When it catches a home network, mostly thanks to Arthur Smith, American Gladiators is coming back, grittier than ever.
