Alexander Figueroa, also known as Alex Figueroa, has been kicked off of the football team and suspended from the University of Miami following his arrest for sexual battery on Tuesday, according to MSN Fox Sports. Coral Gables Police say that 20-year-old University Of Miami football player Alexander Figueroa raped a 17-year-old girl. The report also details how Figueroa, along with 20-year-old Jawand Blue of Delray Beach, Florida, gave the young girl alcohol to impair her.
A statement released by Blake James, the athletic director of the school, stated: “Earlier today, I permanently dismissed JaWand Blue and Alexander Figueroa from the UM football team. () The University has also suspended the students from school and barred them from all campus facilities while the University conducts an internal investigation and continues to cooperate with local law enforcement.”
The statement regarding Figueroa and Blue also made it clear that the University of Miami holds their players to the “highest” standards, and that accusations of sexual battery in any form are not tolerated and are taken seriously by the school.
Coral Gables Police became aware of the Alexander Figueroa sexual battery charge after the 17-year-old girl came forward to report the incident. When police arrived at 5185 Ponce De Leon Blvd they found that a teenaged girl had been raped on the University of Miami school grounds in a dorm room in Pearson Hall. According to the University of Miami victim, the rape happened early Saturday morning on July 5.
Former Brooke Point High player Alex Figueroa first came to public attention in 2012 when he made a commitment to sign on to the Hurricane team as a linebacker. He was officially signed in 2013.
Hurricane’s coach was excited to sign Alexander Figueroa on because he knew the player was not a stranger to hard work and was confident that he would be a source of encouragement for other team members, according to an article in SB Nation.
No one would have guessed that little more than a year and a half later Alex Figueroa would become embroiled in such a scandal, destroying not only his football career but another young woman’s life in the process.
Figueroa’s player profile has already been stripped down from the University of Miami’s site and it doesn’t seem that a public Alexander Figueroa Facebook page or Wiki exists.
Many University of Miami Hurricane fans have taken to Facebook to show their disappointment over both Alexander Figueroa and Jawand Blue’s sexual assault charges. One commenter states: “What ever happened to the “good old days” when they just set their have to attack helpless 17 year old girls to prove how tough they are?” Another posts: “These guys get a free ride to college and do this. There done as should be!!”
