Trey Songz’ Album ‘Trigga’ Drops, To Debut On Top: Listen On YouTube

Trey Songz dropped his new album Trigga July 1, and critics are split on how good this album is and what it means for his career.

Trigga is the R&B artist’s sixth album and is on its way to debuting at the top, according to Billboard. This will be particularly easy as Robin Thicke’s Paula, which was also released July 1, is predicted to have relatively low numbers at 20,000.

“For the No. 1 position on next week’s Billboard 200, watch for Trey Songz’ Trigga to open atop the list with around 90,000-100,000 sold,” Billboard reported.

With an outlook like that, how could the album be anything but good?

Some critics don’t think it can be anything but good. With fresh lyrics and hot collaborations with such artists as Justin Bieber and Nicki Minaj (to whom Songz gave roses to thank her for her part in the song), it’s hard to see them as wrong.

The LA Times said Trigga ” is delightfully raunchy, with bedroom talk that ranges from the efficiently straightforward to the impressively elaborate.” Overall, the reviewer thought, even at its crudest, Trey Songz’ album is likable and recommended to fans of R&B.

On the other hand, there are those who are less than impressed by Trigga.

In the first track “Cake,” Songz says, “I don’t wanna play by the book, no rules.”

“It’s a shame this dictum didn’t apply to the music,” the Boston Globe said. The reviewer said the album was too safe and was derivative of his past work, though not as good. Overall, Trigga needed “a lot more soul and emotion.”

Ouch.

No matter good or bad, expectations are high for Trigga since Trey Songz’ last album Chapter V debuted at No. 1 with 135,000 copies sold, according to Billboard. With three total top 10 appearances, Songz has the experience to make it to the top.

Trigga can be downloaded on iTunes or purchased exclusively at Target, and the whole album can also be streamed on YouTube. So if you’re tight on cash or don’t know if you want to buy Trey Songz’ latest, head over to the video jungle to have a first listen.

The newest numbers for the Billboard 200 will be released Wednesday, July 9.
