Disney’s ‘Frozen’ Is The Only Music Album So Far In 2014 To Have Sold More Than 1 Million Copies, Changing Times Or Uncertain Future?

Disney’s Frozen is by far one of the biggest movies by the legendary animation studio. However, the movie has moved ahead in an area that is traditionally not a strong foothold for animation movies. Its soundtrack is doing exceptionally well as compared to the movie.

In fact, so far only one album has managed to sell over one million copies in 2014. That music record contains the original soundtrack for Frozen, a movie that already has many success stories of its own. However, this otherwise happy news contains a not-so-great trend. So far, none of the dedicated musical productions released this year have managed to gain substantial sales, reported Tribe Live.

Disney’s Frozen soundtrack has managed to sell more than 3 million copies in 2014, and the year isn’t even out yet. This number wouldn’t have been that prominent or noteworthy, but from the music industry’s perspective, it is certainly a sign of changing times and they aren’t so great. The number gains critical prominence, especially when compared to the focused attempt by the industry players.

Up against Disney’s Frozen, the album that barely comes in second was released by Beyoncé. The self-titled album, which closely resembles Mariah’s Me, I am Mariah, has managed to sell just 700,000 copies so far. The bleak trend only goes darker from here on. After Frozen and Beyoncé comes country star Eric Church with his album The Outsiders (642,000), Lorde’s smash debut Pure Heroine (641,000), and Coldplay’s latest Ghost Stories (589,000), reported Forbes.

In fact, these three albums are the only ones to have exceeded the 500,000 sales figure. However, industry insiders are speculating that there could be a few surprises as the year is only half out. They are betting on global stars like Adele to take the sales figure higher than 500K, but everyone strongly feels that Disney’s Frozen should comfortably hold on to the top spot.

Apart from an exceptional story, Disney’s Frozen has stirred some unexpected emotions in people, especially from the fairer gender. However, none of the songs has evoked such a strong response than the now-cult song “Let it Go” sung by Idina Menzel. The success of the film’s musical elements is apparent from the fact that, apart from the The Lion King, Pocahontas, Jack Johnson’s Sing-A-Longs and Lullabies for the film Curious George, Frozen is the only soundtrack that claimed the number one spot on the Billboard 200, which it did for 13 non-consecutive weeks.

Is this a sign of a serious decline of all album sales that the music industry has witnessed since the advent of digital downloads?
