Kathy Bates Had A Molotov Cocktail Explode In Her Hand For ‘Tammy’

Kathy Bates reveals that she accidentally had a Molotov cocktail explode in her hand while working on the set of her new movie Tammy.

In a related report by The Inquisitr, while Tammy is a comedy, Bates is mostly known for her work in American Horror Story, and we have even more details about the upcoming freak show.

The movie Tammy stars Melissa McCarthy as the titular character, whose normally boring day as a fast food worker goes from bad to worse. Bates’ tribulations begin with running into a deer with her car.

That ‘s when Tammy’s grandmother Pearl (as played by Susan Sarandon) sets up a road trip that quickly spirals down into disaster. Bates plays as Lenore, Pearl’s cousin, who attempts to help Tammy and her grandmother out when they find themselves in trouble with the police.

As part of this “helping,” Kathy Bates had a chance to throw a Molotov cocktail in a scene when her character Lenore is attempting to conceal evidence connected to one of Tammy’s little problems. While that may sound like fun, Bates also found out it can be a bit dangerous:

“That was really a blast, I have to say. I held one a little too long and it exploded in my hand. It was sugar glass, so you really had to throw it quickly once the end of the cloth was lit. It caused a tiny nick from a sharp corner of the sugar glass. It was fun to blow up s— or pretend that you were blowing up s— and not be arrested.”

Of course, Bates did not join the cast of Tammy just so she could throw a Molotov cocktail. The real reason she signed up was so she could learn some tricks of the trade from Melissa McCarthy:

“The main reason for doing it was Melissa McCarthy. I had seen her in ‘Bridesmaids,’ and I wish I could be as clever, wonderful and physical in comedy as she is. I wanted to get to know her — I really wanted to understand her secret. I wondered, ‘How can she stay so real yet push the envelope the way she does, physically and comedically?’ I can see a comparison in her and Lucille Ball in the way Melissa fearlessly goes places that a lot of actresses wouldn’t go. She’s nimble, quick and fearless. “

Melissa McCarthy, Susan Sarandon and Kathy Bates can be seen in Tammy now, which just hit theaters yesterday.
