Ian Somerhalder Talks Pfizer When Gushing About New Film

Ian Somerhalder is in his element, but who knew that would be pharmaceuticals? The actor recently gushed to Digital Spy about his new film The Anomaly and the inspiration behind jumping in board and leaving his day job, Vampire Diaries gig behind.

The Vampire Diaries actor said that he loved the parallels between the script and the conglomerate pharmaceutical companies. Somerhalder speaks at length about these companies, and even mentions Pfizer.

“Imagine Pfizer or Roche, one of those big pharmaceutical companies, being owned by one family. My character’s father Dr Langham, who is played by Brian Cox, understands that humanity is exceeding its resource pool at such an alarming rate that it can’t continue on this path. It’s what’s happening in the world now.”

Somerhalder expanded on the plot, and told the site that Brian Cox’s character uses mind control to slow down humanity from multiplying. Herein lies the crux of the plot which Ian Somerhalder then applied to his life as an activist — sort of.

“You can’t take away people’s free will, but the righteous intention is there. He wants to make sure that the planet has a future, which is something I live to do.”

Being a part of a buzzed about CW show would probably give any actor of his stature their pick of the litter for pet projects. A low budget production doesn’t immediately come to mind when we see someone like Ian Somerhalder who could have easily gotten away with being a matinee idol. Somerhalder explained the reason why he said yes to this project, and it has everything to do with screenwriter Noel Clark:

“Noel is extremely giving with his information, and he has so much passion and compassion for the art of film. He shares it so freely and I’m grateful for that.”

Aside from his role on The Vampire Diaries, Ian is also known for his political eco friendly tweets. For example, his bio says that he’s “happily contemplating Man’s existential dilemma..”

Here’s a few of his tweets just to get an idea.

Ian’s new film drops on July 4 in the U.K.
