Always Wants ‘Like A Girl’ To Mean Amazing Things [VIDEO]

In our society, the term “like a girl” is usually associated negatively, such as “hit like a girl” or “run like a girl.” In short, it is usually associated with weakness or inferiority. But why? Why is it that such a term even exists? Is it because of the relational view with the masculine and feminine? True on a historical level there has been certain gender specifics, but does it really have to be degraded to insults? Worse, how would a little girl feel if what she does, like the boys, is “like a girl”? The company Always wants everyone to reevaluate what “like a girl” means.

Uploaded on the Always YouTube channel on June 26, 2014, the video already has over 4.5 million viewers as of the publishing of this article. The “about” section of the video reads as follows:

“Using #LikeAGirl as an insult is a hard knock against any adolescent girl. And since the rest of puberty’s really no picnic either, it’s easy to see what a huge impact it can have on a girl’s self-confidence.

“We’re kicking off an epic battle to make sure that girls everywhere keep their confidence throughout puberty and beyond, and making a start by showing them that doing it #LikeAGirl is an awesome thing.”

Utilizing a brand new hashtag #LikeAGirl, Always wants to change the perceived view of “like a girl” is, to make it a positive and empowering quote for adolescent girls all around. I admire their efforts and understand why they are doing it too. I mean, they got both boys, men, AND women to act out what it looks like to “hit like a girl,” “run like a girl,” and “throw like a girl.” These people did horrible caricature charades of what it would look like, all implementing stereotypes.

It is good that Always joined in during this time too. According to Mashable, Always started this campaign during a time when women’s empowerment is becoming prominent. This includes Sheryl Sandberg’s #BanBossy effort with the Girl Scouts and Condoleeza Rice. Even we here at The Inquisitr reported Pantene’s efforts for women to “not be sorry”.
