Ann Coulter: Soccer A Liberal Move Leading To Country’s Moral Decay

Ann Coulter has made a name for herself as a conservative pundit and writer. If she thought of entering the sports world, she may want to think twice.

In her article, “America’s Favorite National Pastime: Hating Soccer” posted on the Clarion Ledger website, Coulter sites immigration, the inability to use your hands, and lack of scoring, amongst other things, as the reasons that soccer is pushing a liberal agenda which will lead the nation into moral decay.

According to the San Jose Mercury News, Coulter lambasted the sport, writing “any growing interest in soccer can only be a sign of the nation’s moral decay.” This as the United States Men’s Soccer Team makes its way into the round of 16 of the World Cup, and with the United States’ 1.8 million viewers for the Portugal game and 1.7 million for the Germany game. Coulter then suggests soccer is not a “real sport” and also tries to push a liberal agenda onto the American sports public. “Individual achievement is not a big factor in soccer,” she wrote. “In a real sport, players fumble passes, throw bricks, and drop fly balls — all in front of a crowd….”

Coulter continues, “In soccer, the blame is dispersed and almost no one scores anyway. There are no heroes, no losers, no accountability, and no child’s fragile self-esteem is bruised. There’s a reason perpetually alarmed women are called ‘soccer moms,’ not ‘football moms.'” Coulter then ends her premise with “If more ‘Americans’ are watching soccer today, it’s only because of the demographic switch effected by Teddy Kennedy’s 1965 immigration law,” she wrote. “I promise you: No American whose great-grandfather was born here is watching soccer. One can only hope that, in addition to learning English, these new Americans will drop their soccer fetish with time.”

During the United States-Germany match, U.S. captain Clint Dempsey, whose nose was already broken in their 2-1 victory over Ghana, was driving towards the German end when he suffered another blow to his face. The German team kicked the ball out of bounds so Dempsey could receive treatment from the U.S. medical staff. Then, the Americans threw the ball into the German goalkeeper to return the possession to Germany, effectively thanking the Germans for the time to care for Dempsey.

Some, like Coulter, may find fault with that. But many people may see the above gestures as sportsmanlike, perhaps even gentlemanly. Coulter may want to look further into the game of soccer and learn the subtle nuances of the sport. True, they don’t play with their hands, but, if you look closely, you’ll see they do play with their hearts.
