Revealed: The Harsh Reality Behind All Those Exciting Facebook Status Updates [Video]

A short film that attempts to show the actual stories behind all those exciting status updates on Facebook has gone viral. The video shows the paradox between the online and offline life of a fictitious man named Scott Thomson.

The video starts off with Scott looking at his computer screen, in despair and visibly unhappy at the exciting lives his other friends are living on Facebook. All of them seem to be having exciting vacations, awesome food and gorgeous girlfriends – as Scott himself looks at his boring life, food and unresponsive girlfriend. Then he updates his own Facebook status…with a statement that is in complete contrast to his actual situation.

The scenes then transitions to Scott’s own life. His boring office presentations become “awesome” office presentations on Facebook. His sad break up becomes “Finally!! Single again”, status updates. Most of his “20k run” happens inside his car. When he is fired from his job, he says he is quitting his dead-end job. All the while, he earns a gazillion amount of likes from his friends who have no clue as to what is actually going on, outside of Facebook.

I am sure you would identify this to be among the most depressing videos you would see all day. But don’t you think there is at least some amount of truth in what is being shown here?

The video seems to make the viewers aware of the fact that social media websites like Twitter and Facebook simply add yet another layer of perception around your actual lives.

What do you think?

The video was uploaded on June 2, on to YouTube an has since then crossed over 900,000 views and is fast approaching the 1 million views mark. If you are a Facebook junkie, there is no reason why you should miss this video.
