Oculus Rift Founder: ’30fps A Failure’

Oculus Rift founder Palmer Luckey has stated outright that a 30fps frame rate is just not enough these days. Considering how the Oculus Rift is mostly a single player accessory by the public’s standards, he might not be considering some games like Battlefield: Hardline which will allegedly support up to 32 players at once. Numbers like that will most likely require some sacrifice to make them work, including the frame rate.

As previously reported by The Inquisitr, Battlefield: Hardline will supposedly achieve 1080p 60fps even on the Xbox One, though considering their track record it looks doubtful. Battlefield 4 was launched riddled with glitches and performance issues, and it also supported a large number of players simultaneously.

The Oculus Rift founder didn’t specify a resolution benchmark though, which would be even more noticeable only an inch or so away from the eye. It may be time for Sony and Microsoft to let them know that bragging about your display too early on can seriously set up the gamers for disappointment.

Palmer Luckey stated on the subject of frame rate expectations:

“VR is going to need much higher frame rates than consoles, although even for consoles or traditional PC games, I don’t think 30fps is smart. It’s not a good artistic decision, it’s a failure.”

We’ll see if he continues with his assertion when a developer tries to rush a new game out for the Rift and it only performs about the same level as the lower-end Xbox 360 titles. Will he be continuing to slam the consoles and lower-end PCs, will he chastise the developer for “failing,” or will he instead turn and apologize to the public for speaking too soon?

It’s still early in the life cycles of the current gen consoles, and if history has shown us anything it’s that we won’t see just how far they can be pushed until the end. Look at Grand Theft Auto V or Assassin’s Creed IV on the Xbox 360 and PS3 for an example of what those consoles could do when pushed to their limits.

Do you think Oculus Rift founder Palmer Luckey spoke too soon about how “30fps” is “a failure,” or is that simply the standard everybody will be held to now?
