American Tourist Allegedly Raped In World Cup Host City

According to CBS News, police in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso are investigating the alleged attempted rape of an American woman on Friday night in the city that hosted the World Cup soccer match between Australia and Chile.

A Cuiaba police department statement said a 24-year-old woman told them she was attacked Friday night after the Chile-Australia match.

The woman, who hails from the US, told police she was sleeping in the house of someone she met at a party held to celebrate Chile’s victory at the World Cup games when she awoke with a man on top of her. Her screams woke up her boyfriend who was sleeping nearby, and scared away the alleged assailant.

Police said several representatives of the US Embassy also accompanied the woman to a local hospital where she was treated.

A medical exam found later that rape had not actually been committed and police were waiting on additional tests, according to a second report from public security officials published by Reuters.

The embassy said in a brief statement that it was aware of the incident. In accordance with the Privacy Act, it could not share information about a US citizen without his or her written permission.

Cuiaba is located in central Brazil. Although the country sees few tourist, it will host three more games. Russia will square off against South Korea this Tuesday, while Nigeria and Bosnia will do battle on June 21. Japan and Colombia will meet on June 24.

In the wake of this incident and the rape and kidnapping of a foreign student in Rio in April, Brazil is taking more precautionary measures to ramp up security during the World Cup, with about 100,000 police patrolling the 12 host cities with nearly 60,000 soldiers.
