Kevin Harvick broke the Michigan International Speedway lap speed record not once, but twice during the qualifying round, earning himself a spot at the pole for the NASCAR Quicken Loans 400. Jeff Gordon, who reclaimed the points lead after last week’s race, will line up next to Harvick in the two spot. Dale Earnhardt Jr. – who has had quite a season in this year’s Sprint Cup series – starts third, with Aric Almirola in the forth position. Paul Menard and Brad Keselowski line up in fifth and sixth, respectively.

Other notables include Danica Patrick, who was looking strong in last week’s race, running in second deep into the race before a crash ended her day. Patrick, who leads NASCAR in Twitter followers and has no trouble picking up endorsements, despite failing to win a NASCAR event to date, will be starting in the 27th position. Jimmie Johnson, who has been on fire of late, will start in the seventh position. Ryan Newman, who drives the Quicken Loans car, will be starting 24th.

Expect a strong showing from Dale Earnhardt Jr. – who recently raced go karts with Charles Barkely – in today’s Quicken Loans 400. On top of having a great starting position, Michigan International Speedway is one of Dale Jr.’s best tracks on the NASCAR circuit – if not his best, according to a Yahoo Sports report.

Look for Jimmie Johnson to come to the Quicken Loans 400 hungry. Johnson has yet to win one at Michigan International Speedway and taking the checkered flag at the NASCAR Quicken Loans 400 would be a welcome way for Jimmie to continue his dominance this year.

Keep your eye on Keselowski as well. He has to be tired of finishing second and, being from the Detroit area, will be hungry to win one in front of his home town crowd.

Of course, you can never count out Kevin Harvick, especially given that he’s starting in the pole position. Harvick has had the pole eight times in his Sprint Cup career (today makes nine), including two others pole starts this year. In his last two starts from the pole, he won one – at Darlington – and finished second in the other – at Kansas. He has won once at Michigan International Speedway. Harvick is looking for win number three on the year at the NASCAR Quicken Loans 400.
