League of Legends is 15 million strong (and growing)

For some time, MOBA titles like League of Legends, Heroes of Newerth and even DotA were largely considered to be niche titles with modest communities. Going by the latest statistics from Riot Games, that appears to be changing. Rapidly.

Just in time for the final phases of League of Legend‘s first season, Riot Games published some impressive player statistics over on the official League of Legends website.

According to said stats, the free-to-play title has a whopping 15 million registered accounts, with over 4 million of those logging in month-to-month. Nearly 500,000 of those 4 million are logged in at once during the game’s more busy days – like the recent launch of Wukong, for instance.

If those stats aren’t impressive enough, the recent League of Legends season one championship pulled in a massive 1.7 million viewers, with over 900,000 concurrent viewers throughout the event. As far as e-sports goes, that’s quite an impressive achievement.

At the end of the post, Riot Games president Marc Merrill teased that League of Legends fans can expect some exciting new things over the course of the rest of the year. Here’s to hoping he’s referring to that engine update and the accompanying new map they’ve been talking about for so long.
