Jared Leto has been long rumored to be in the running to join Marvel's universe in the title role for Doctor Strange, but don't get your hopes up yet. A couple other actors with excellent track records are reportedly being talked to by Marvel as well: Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hardy.
Dr. Strange, or Dr. Stephen Strange, was created in 1963 by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Strange is a neurosurgeon who International Business Times states turns into a "Sorcerer Supreme and Earth's protector against magical and mystical threats."
To go with Jared Leto, 42, wouldn't be the worst choice ever. While he hasn't dedicated his life to acting due to his other successful position as the frontman for 30 Seconds To Mars, Leto isn't afraid to go all out for his roles. In his most recent movie, Dallas Buyers Club, he completely shaved his body save for his head of hair and lost 30 pounds, according to MTV Style. It seems like the only thing keeping Leto from the role is his touring schedule with his band, and if he actually wants to do it in the first place.
Then there's Tom Hardy, 36, another actor who isn't afraid to literally transform himself for his roles. He bulked up for both Warrior and for his role as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises. You can also see him with a more slimmed down physique in movies like the blockbuster Leonardo Dicaprio-starring Inception. With what he's done for his roles, it's safe to say he'd do whatever it takes to make sure fans recognize a Marvel favorite.
Then there's Benedict Cumberbatch, 37, who is best known for playing the most recent incarnation of Sherlock Holmes. When talking about his qualifications for the role of Dr. Strange, the International Business Times article pointed out that he's close to the actual height of the character at six-feet. Dr. Strange is six-feet two-inches tall. In comparison, Leto and Hardy are shorter at five-feet nine-inches.
In the end it's all up to Marvel, and more specifically Kevin Feige, on who will play one of the earlier Marvel characters. All three actors seem to have what it takes in terms of talent even though some may lack in terms of physical appearance. Deadline reports that Marvel may be looking closer at Hardy and Cumberbatch over Leto, but said that "it's hard to go wrong either way here if one of these guys get the job."
The movie is still in development so it may be a while until we find whether Jared Leto, Tom Hardy, or Benedict Cumberbatch will get the role.
