‘The Vampire Diaries’ Spoilers: Are These Two Characters Really Dead?

Over the weekend, Vampire Diaries actor Ian Somerhalder posted an image on his Instagram and Twitter pages that supposedly teases the fate of his character, Damon Salvatore. The picture shows a tombstone for his character with the caption: “Rest In Peace Damon Salvatore. #GameOver :(.”

In the season five finale for The Vampire Diaries, which aired on May 15, Damon went to the Other Side to save his friends, but he was unable to make it back. This resulted in him and Bonnie (Katerina Graham) being trapped at the end of the episode.

The image posted by Somerhalder has led many Vampire Diaries fans to believe that his character may, in fact, be dead. But Julie Plec told TVLine that both characters will return. However, she also said that there is a bit of a “mystery” surrounding the next season of The Vampire Diaries.

“Did they die? Did they find peace? Are they still on the Other Side? Does the Other Side still exist? If not, where the hell are they? And will they ever come back?” the Vampire Diaries co-creator said. “Certainly, we will see Ian [Somerhalder] and Kat [Graham] again, but where and in what context? That’s part of the mystery of season 6.”

Plec assured that neither Damon nor Bonnie will have doppelgangers in the next season of The Vampire Diaries.

“That was some season 5 fun we got to have, but with Katherine and Silas gone, I think we’re done with that,” she added.

In a related report from The Inquisitr, Nina Dobrev said she is uncertain what will happen in season 6 of The Vampire Diaries. At the time that article was published, Dobrev said she hadn’t seen “the last couple of episodes,” because of her busy schedule. But she does believe Damon died in the finale.

“I think Stefan died in the second-to-last episode, and then Damon died in the last episode,” she added. “I think I survived, I don’t know! I mean, I really don’t know what is going to happen, they don’t tell us. I’m in the dark as much as you guys all are.”

This recent image is not the first time Somerhalder has brought up the possibility that his Vampire Diaries character might be dead. Shortly after the finale aired, he took to Twitter to post his apologies about Damon’s fate.

Footage of Somerhalder at a fan convention in Brazil recently surfaced on the website, EntertainmentWise. In the clip, he talked about his regrets following the possible death of his Vampire Diaries character.

“What I was mostly saddened about is that I didn’t spend all this time with Katerina Graham, because she is not only my sister, but she’s one of the most talented actresses in Hollywood,” he told an audience full of screaming Vampire Diaries fans.

So, what is it, Vampire Diaries fans? Is Somerhalder telling the truth, or is he playing a game?
