Justin Bieber has apologized for a racially-laced joke he made on a video clip years ago in which he made reference to the “N-word.”
The young star released a statement on Sunday to the AP blaming the “joke” on the fact that he was a “kid” when he made it:
“I’m very sorry. I take all my friendships with people of all cultures very seriously and I apologize for offending or hurting anyone with my childish and inexcusable behavior,” said Bieber.
The video containing the offensive comments was first released by the British paper, The Sun. Even though it dates back over five years, it only surfaced recently.
In his statement about the Bieber joke he said:
“I thought it was ok to repeat hurtful words and jokes, but I didn’t realize at the time that it wasn’t funny and that in fact my actions were continuing the ignorance,” the statement said. “Thanks to friends and family I learned from my mistakes and grew up and apologized for those wrongs. Now that these mistakes from the past have become public I need to apologize again to all of those who I have offended.”
The fact that Justin Bieber was only a kid at the time when he made the racist joke on the video clip hasn’t stopped him from making other offensive comments in his more adult years.
He is known for having been in trouble with the law for a variety of misdemeanors showing that he never really matured properly and he seems to revel in the constant media attention he gets.
In order to clarify his comments about the Bieber joke, he said: “Ignorance has no place in our society and I hope the sharing of my faults can prevent others from making the same mistake in the future. I thought long and hard about what I wanted to say but telling the truth is always what’s right.”
