POW Bowe Bergdahl Told Girlfriend 5 Years Ago Not To Wait: She Finds New Love, But Asks, ‘What Should I Do Now?’

Released American POW Bowe Bergdahl might have a difficult situation facing him in his personal life upon arriving home. Five years ago the young man — then in his early 20s — told his 19-year-old girlfriend, Monica Lee, not to wait for him and move on with her life. Since that time, his ex-girlfriend has found a new love in the form of Justin Forsdick; both are very happy together.

With Bowe released from the Taliban, this spurs an emotional entanglement for Monica and himself. Allison Lee, Monica’s mother, shares with Daily Mail how hard it was for her daughter to cope with Bowe telling her not to wait for him after his capture by the Taliban:

“He said he wanted her to go with her life, and not feel like she had to wait. No one knew how long he would be held for. Emotionally, it was very trying for her. She was 19 going on 20 at the time. It was a lot more than most people have to deal with.

“She’s learned a lot to be quiet about how she feels but she has always been very supportive of Bowe, and very anxious about him.”

Now that Bowe Bergdahl is released, Allison says Monica is glad, but confused:

“She asked me, ‘What should I do now?.’ She is a little confused what is going on. She hadn’t been briefed lately about his situation.”

Allison goes on to say that her daughter “waited a very long time” before she found another man in her life. Bergdahl’s girlfriend was embroiled in turmoil surrounding his hostage situation. Aware of this at the time, Bowe didn’t want Monica feeling obligated to him. Communication via Skype kept them in touch daily until Bergdahl’s capture by the enemy in 2009.

The families of both Bowe and Monica know each other well and have for years. Monica Lee is currently out in the mountains with friends and will learn more of her ex-boyfriend’s status when she returns. Her mother hopes Bowe will stop by and see them:

“We’re just so thankful, and excited, and hope to see Bowe. He used to come by and visit quite often, so it will be nice to see his face again.

“There’s a good home for him to come to, that will be good, safe and comfortable. We are just so thankful to the Lord that he’s safe.”

It will be months before Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl returns to his Idaho home. He has many stops abroad due to military protocol before finally heading to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. He’s in good condition, but a string of physical and psychological evaluations must be conducted before he’s officially released. CNN reports that friends of Bergdahl credit him as a “strong, well-rounded, and easy to talk to” person.

Monica Lee has been in a relationship with Justin Forsdick since 2012. She waited three years before getting involved with someone else after Bowe insist she not wait for him any longer. It’s unclear if the story of Bowe Bergdahl’s private life involving his ex-girlfriend will be followed up on given the gravity of his release as an American POW.
