Miss South Texas: 100 Pounds Weight Loss Was Revenge On Bullies

Miss South Texas, A.K.A. Keli Kryfko, decided nine years ago that she was going to do something about her weight, and when the taunts from bullies got too much, she did just that.

Now aged 23, Keli, from Houston, lost a staggering 100 pounds and transformed not only her body, but also her career and life.

Back in eighth grade, Keli was a huge 230 pounds and wore a size 24. She remembers what it felt like being left out in middle school, as she was unable to make the cheerleading team or star in a school play.

Keli admitted: “I wasn’t in the right body for that. And I definitely wasn’t in the right mindset. I didn’t treat myself well.”

Sadly, Keli isn’t the only overweight kid to be bullied; a 2012 study published in the journal Pediatrics showed that obese children are more than 60% more likely to be bullied at school and are more prone to the symptoms of depression, anxiety and loneliness.

Miss South Texas also spoke about just how unfit she was back in the day:

“I wasn’t able to do any of it and it was so embarrassing. So I went back into the locker room hoping no one would notice and I overheard these girls saying, ‘Can you believe the fat girl couldn’t do any of it?’ And I realized, oh my gosh, they’re talking about me. I didn’t want that to be my definition. I’m much more than those names that people are calling me.”

So what did Keli do when enough was enough and the decision was made to lose weight? Well, as she explained, she took it slow, at first just giving up her favorite drink, Dr. Pepper: “That is still my toughest breakup to date,” she joked.

After that it was much easier, as she gave up fatty and fried foods and reduced her portion sizes when she ate. On top of that, she slowly introduced an exercise regime and, after some time, the weight began to drop off. In just a year and a half, she lost about 70 pounds, and now weighs under 130 pounds.

Keli said she feels that losing all that weight, becoming healthy and winning the esteemed title of Miss South Texas was the perfect revenge on the people who taunted her in her “bigger” days. We tend to agree and think that it’s the perfect revenge. Do you agree? Share your thoughts with us in the comments feed below.
