Don Rickles Gets Roasted By Tina Fey and Amy Poehler

Don Rickles received a healthy dose of his own medicine from Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

For those readers who are completely unfamiliar with the comedian’s work, Rickles made a name for himself dishing insults to just about anyone and everyone. Those unfortunate souls seated too close to the stage during one of the guy’s shows often found themselves the butt of his mean-spirited jokes. Don doesn’t pick on just one group of people — he’s got all of us in his sights.

To adequately prepare the planet for the upcoming television special One Night Only: An All-Star Comedy Tribute to Don Rickles, the boys and girls at Spike have unleashed a promo clip that finds Rickles receiving a few barbs courtesy of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

If you don’t feel like watching the clip — which really won’t take up too much of your time — then you should read this summary by the folks over at Mediaite. Those who are familiar with comedian’s appearance should get a chuckle or two out of the joke. A refresher course is lurking at the top of this article.

“‘We are here tonight to celebrate Don Rickles,’ Fey began. ‘And honestly, it’s almost like he’s here with us.” When Poehler pointed out the 87-year-old Rickles in the audience, Fey said, ‘Jesus, I thought that was somebody’s purse.'”

Poehler also jokes that the folks at Spike decided to add the former Saturday Night Live cast members after they realized there weren’t any women paying tribute to Don Rickles during the event. Although famous fellas such as David Letterman, Jerry Seinfeld, Jon Stewart, and Jimmy Kimmel were all on-tap for the special, Don wasn’t receiving any love from the ladies.

“So here we are because they thought it was important for Don to be honored by at least one woman — which apparently is what we count as,” Amy joked.

Rolling Stone featured a clip from the Don Rickles special that finds director Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro paying tribute to the insult comic. Scorsese points out that he and De Niro worked together on eight different projects until they joined forces with Rickles for the 1995 gangster flick Casino. Since that film, the director and the legendary actor haven’t teamed up for a picture.

“On behalf of Leo DiCaprio, thanks a lot,” De Niro remarks.

One Night Only: An All-Star Comedy Tribute to Don Rickles is presently scheduled to air on May 28 at 9 pm on Spike. Are you planning to check out the tribute to the famed insult comedian?
