Final Fantasy Versus XIII hasn’t gone into full production (yet)

Final Fantasy Versus XIII was announced around five years ago, so you would probably expect development on the title is well under way. According to a feature from the latest Famitsu (translated by Andriasang), apparently that isn’t the case.

In the feature, Square Enix’s Tetsuya Nomura noted that only the ‘core team’ is working on Final Fantasy Versus XIII, and they’re only just now preparing to enter into the “full production” phase.

Before you let the news dampen your spirits too much, this doesn’t mean Final Fantasy XIII development is just now getting started – after all, we got to see the very first gameplay footage late last year. But it does mean that Versus XIII could still be a ways off.

On a lighter note, Nomura detailed the game’s interesting innovation involving cutscenes. The cutscenes will be split up into pre-rendered and real time, with the latter allowing for complete character control. What level of interaction we’ll have remains to be seen, but it’s an interesting little tidbit.
