Top seed Nadal defeated Andy Murray on Friday and then made easy work of Grigor Dimitrov in the semifinal, setting up a much-anticipated final with the seconded seed Djokovic.
“I played a solid match and was very good with my backhand,” Nadal said after advancing to the final with the win over Dimitrov. “It was good confirmation that I play better. The forehand starts to fly again, the top spins as well — a lot of positive things.”
The road to the final wasn’t as easy for Novak Djokovic, who had a fight to get bast the big serve of Milos Raonic 6-7 (5-7) 7-6 (7-4) 6-3. It took Djokovic three hours to get past the eight seed Raonic, who notched 17 aces in the match.
“It’s a big win because it gives me strength and belief that I can hopefully carry towards the final and the rest the season,” said Djokovic.
Nadal and Djokovic will now face off Sunday at 2 pm local time (3 pm GMT).

The Spaniard said he’s not taking Djokovic lightly in the final.
“Djokovic always plays unbelievable, he’s a complete player and has all the shots,” Nadal said. “If I want to have chances to win I have to play my best tennis. It will be a very tough match. I have to be ready for the competition.”
Win or lose, Rafael Nadal has already made history with his run in Rome. The victory gave Nadal his 51st straight semifinal win on clay courts, and also led to his 91st tour-level final. He is now alone in sixth place on the all-time finals list, passing Andre Agassi.
A win would also allow Nadal to set the record for titles at Foro Italico. Nadal won the tournament in 2005-’07, ’09-’10 and ’12-’13, and comes into the title match with a 14-match winning streak.
