The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is rapidly approaching $500 million at the worldwide box office.

Although director Marc Webb’s sequel to his 2012 reboot has only generated $120 million in North America as of this writing, the movie has performed exceptionally well overseas. According to the numbers currently posted at Box Office Mojo, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has earned $340 million worldwide.

The follow-up is presently on-track to make as much money as the first installment. The Amazing Spider-Man ended up snagging an impressive $720 million during its theatrical run two years ago. Those who were a little worried that The Amazing Spider-Man 3 may not happen can sleep comfortably in their Underoos tonight. The next entry in the franchise should move forward as planned.

Marvel characters are definitely having a pretty good year. In addition to The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Captain America’s latest big screen adventure made a tidy sum from audiences around the world. The film’s worldwide total is currently perched at a very healthy $683 million, which is almost double of the original film’s gross.

Now that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 fans have properly consumed the movie, many are wondering what’s in store for Peter Parker in the next flick. Warning: If you haven’t seen the movie yet, then it’s probably time to find something else to read. In other words, there are some major spoilers in the coming passages.

According to ComicBook.com, Marc Webb intends to follow Spider-Man’s recovery following the death of Gwen Stacey. The filmmaker said that the character’s demise stuck with him after reading the comic, which is why he wanted to make sure that he perfectly nailed the sequence.

“It stayed with me in a profound way. It broke me. I was anxious and curious to explore it on the screen. From the very beginning I planned on doing it. For me, everything in the movie was built around that moment. There’s a cost to being a hero,” the Amazing Spider-Man 2 director explained to Entertainment Weekly.

He added, “It’s going to be really difficult for Peter Parker to move forward. But that’s the challenge of it: How do you recover from that? That’s going to play out in the next movie.”

Screenrant reports that The Amazing Spider-Man 3 should arrive in theaters on July 10, 2016. Since Sony Pictures is thinking pretty far into the future, the fourth installment of the series hits the big screen on May 4, 2018.
