NBC Renews ‘About A Boy’ For A Second Season, Cancels ‘Community’

It’s a busy day for NBC. The network just announced right before its upfronts on Monday that they have decided to renew their surprise hit comedy series About A Boy, and their runaway show Hannibal.

Unfortunately while some series like About A Boy saw a green light for another season, veteran comedies like Community are getting the axe.

About a Boy stars Minnie Driver and newcomer David Walton, and the show certainly broke out of the pack as a spring replacement. This is yet another hit series for series creator Jason Katims. Prior to About a Boy Jason Katims has been the voice behind Friday Night Lights and Parenthood, who both called NBC home at one time or another. Variety is reporting that Parenthood will most likely be ordered for a final season by the network.

Minnie Driver took to Twitter to announce the exciting news that About a Boy is being picked up for a second season:

As for Community before NBC decided to cancel the series it was very much a series that was on the bubble. Never really earning stellar ratings Community skirted along for five seasons on critical acclaim even though their ratings weren’t through the roof. NBC had hopes that their audience would grow, but between contentious behind the scenes squabbles and various drama with production, it took attention away from the work and eventually the episodes failed to live up to its early credibility.

This included series show runner Dan Harmon being fired after fighting with Chevy Chase. After the series took a hit, Chevy exited the series and Harmon was brought back on board to fix what had been done. Even though NBC was up to try and make Community work it seemed like some members of the cast were already over it. Its break out actor and rapper Donald Glover jumped ship after Episode 5 last year, which also didn’t help the series.

Another breakout of the series, Gillian Jacobs, took to Twitter to address Community’s cancellation:
