Romanian Couple Suspected In Oil Scam Left Millions In Gold Inside Doomsday Bunker

A Romanian couple suspected in an oil scam left behind millions of dollars in gold in a doomsday bunker. Radu and Diana Nemes were in the process of being deported from the United States for the role they allegedly played in a $68 million tax evasion scheme. Law enforcement officers now believe the pair left about $2.7 million in gold and silver coins inside a “fully stocked” bunker on their 53-acre Washington property.

Diana and Radu Nemes of Yelm, Washington, were wanted in Europe for allegedly selling approximately 2 million tons of diesel fuel for the government. The Romanian couple then supposedly reported the oil as a lower grade of industrial and maritime fuel to avoid the $68.9 million in taxes owed on the transaction. The pair waived extradition to Romania according to legal documents filed in the US District Court for the Western District of Washington.

Excerpt from a court statement by Assistant US Attorney Norman Barbosa:

“The Nemeses’ illegal possession of multiple firearms, coupled with their access to a fully stocked doomsday bunker, suggests they were prepared for an extended standoff with law enforcement. She and her husband expected law enforcement to eventually arrive and the sophisticated surveillance system at their home suggest they were watching carefully for sings of law enforcement.”

Federal prosecutors claim that Radu and Diana Nemes utilized laundered funds to operate multiple “shell businesses” in their native Romania. Law enforcement investigators found discovered four pistols, an AR 15 semiautomatic rifle, and an “array of other weapons” at the 53-acre Washington property the agents referred to as a “compound.”

The so-called doomsday bunker could be sealed from the inside and boasted a solar power system, multiple diesel generators, a backup battery system, and an extensive water filtration system. FBI forensic accountants involved with the oil scam investigation believe that the 88 gold coins and 10,500 silver coins found inside the bunker are just a fraction of the loot buried elsewhere on the Yelm land.

Two of the Romanian couple’s neighbors reportedly told law enforcement officers that they helped Radu and Diana bury more gold on their property. Searches of the Washington acreage with ground-penetrating radar have not yet been able to locate the $2,748,498 in unaccounted for funds that prosecutors feel the couple possessed.

Diana Nemes is pregnant with her third child and was transported back to Romania. Although Radu Nemes also waived extradition, he has not yet been shipped back home. Investigators also feel that profits from the oil scam were laundered through banks in both the United States and Dubai.
