Jon Hamm: Porn Films Were ‘Soul Crushing’ Recalls The ‘Mad Men’ Star

Jon Hamm says working in porn was “soul crushing.” Before the Mad Men star became famous for playing the role of Don Draper on AMC, he also participated in The Big Date. A clip of the 1996 dating show recently resurfaced and showed Hamm losing out in the contest.

“I was actually at that time working as a set dresser for Cinemax soft core porn movies. It was soul crushing,” the 43-year-old Mad Men star stated during an interview with Vanity Fair.

The Big Date was hosted by Mark L. Wahlberg. The now viral clip of the 90s dating show does not depict the suave and debonair persona that he has become known for since putting on a 1960s suit and playing Don Draper on Mad Men. Mary, the woman who had her choice of the men on the panel, said that Hamm’s downfall was not ‘saying hello’ when he walked onto the stage.

Hamm, who was introduced as a waiter, had this to say when asked by Wahlberg how he would treat Mary should she choose him for a date:

“Start off with some fabulous food, a little fabulous conversation and end it with a fabulous foot massage for an evening of total fabulosity.”

Jon Hamm had this to say about landing a role on Mad Men:

“This is the best job I’ve ever had and maybe ever will have in my life. It’s so fun to play all of this. It can be relentlessly dark. It can be terribly sexually inappropriate, is a way to say it. But who else gets a chance to do any of that stuff” There’s so much there.”

Hamm’s newest movie, Million Dollar Arm, opened during a green carpet extravaganza earlier this week. The organizers opted against the traditional red carpet and went for the look of astro turf in honor of the baseball movie. A portion of Hollywood’s Walk of Fame was transformed into a pitcher’s mound for a contest help during the Million Dollar Arm event. The Mad Men star referred to baseball as his “favorite sport in the world.”

The Disney movie tells the true story of a sports agent J.B. Bernstein, played by Jon Hamm. The baseball scout went to India in search of the next great pitching stars. While in the country where baseball really isn’t played, Bernstein launched a reality show competition to find a player who could score big in the majors back home in America. ESPN’s Baseball Tonight did a live show outside of El Capitan Theater with Cincinnati Reds great Barry Larkin among those sharing the highlights of the evening, along with some baseball history.
