‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ Brings In Super Hero Box Office Numbers With $92M

Opening weekend for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has just about come to a close and estimates are in, showing that Spidey has turned in some impressive box office numbers with $92 million. The sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man stars returning cast members Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, and Sally Field, with new cast members Jamie Foxx and Dane DeHaan as Electro and the Green Goblin, respectively.

Although The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has brought in big numbers, the film has had mixed reviews so far, landing it with a current Rotten Tomatoes rating of 54% at the close of the weekend. On the other hand, Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man sequel from 2004 sits snugly with a 94% certified fresh rating. The first Amazing Spider-Man film ended up with a 73% fresh rating.

However, $92 million wasn’t enough to top Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which debuted to $95 million last month. Still, according to Box Office Mojo, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is doing extremely well overseas, already bringing in $277 million in three weeks, making its worldwide total $369 million.

“It’s a terrific start here in the U.S. and the world result is no less than stunning,” says Sony’s worldwide distribution exec Rory Bruer, according to Entertainment Weekly. “We had a record-breaking opening in India ($6.5 million, the best-ever for a Hollywood title) and Brazil ($10.5 million, or 76 percent higher than the first). We had fantastic results in France ($10.6 million) and we had a huge day in China ($10.4 million on Sunday). It’s popping and working everywhere in the world. We’re absolutely on track to not only meet our goals but to exceed them.”

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is just one more super hero movie that continues to draw in huge crowds and with the amount of super hero movies to come, it seems like studios will continue to ring in hundreds of millions in box office numbers. Spider-Man’s biggest competition will come in two weeks, when Godzilla tears its way onto the big screen. The week after that, Fox’s X-Men: Days of Future Past will add more heat to the mix.

Read the official synopsis for the film:

It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp.
