Kentucky Derby Results: California Chrome Dominates Competition

The 2014 Kentucky Derby results are in, and anyone lucky enough to bet on California Chrome is a few dollars richer today.

The frontrunner going into the race, California Chrome pulled ahead in the final stretch and then turned on the burners, separating himself from the pack and ending with a five-length victory.

The full 2014 Kentucky Derby results included Commanding Curve finishing second and Danza landing the third spot. Wicked Strong finished fourth, and Samraat was fifth.

The 2014 Kentucky Derby actually suffered its first loss a few days ago, when Churchill Downs veterinarian Larry Bramlage forced frontrunner Hopportunity out of the race.

“Bad news travels fast,” trainer Bob Baffert told the Associated Press. “The horse is OK. He’s just not 100 percent and it’s too close to the race, so I pulled the plug… We missed a Hoppertunity… I’ve had a lot of luck here so I can’t really complain.”

Hoppertunity had been listed as a leading contender along with California Chrome, Wicked Strong, Danza, and Intense Holiday.

Wicked Ground raced out of post 20, while California Chrome drew the number five spot.

The wicked weather was another subtext to the 2014 Kentucky Derby. Throughout the week torrential rains soaked the field at Churchill Downs, though race officials said there would be nothing stopping the race.

“This will be our 140th Derby and we haven’t postponed one yet,” Churchill Downs’ senior director of communications and media services told Darren Rogers told CNN. “Lightning or a washout of the track could potentially cause a delay but a postponement would be highly unusual.”

But by the time the race started the weather was pleasant, with blue skies and warm temperatures for the near-record 164,906 people in attendance.
