DICE: No plans for official Battlefield 3 mod tools

Well, here’s some news that probably won’t go over too well with the PC community: In an interview with German gaming magazine GameStar, EA DICE’s Patrick Söderlund stated that the company has no plans to create official mod tools for Battlefield 3.

“As of now, we are not going to make any modding tools,” said Söderlund. “If you look at the Frostbite engine, and how complex it is, it’s going to be very difficult for people to mod the game, because of the nature of the set up of levels, of the destruction and all those things… it’s quite tricky. So we think it’s going to be too big of a challenge for people to make a mod.”

Before you get your pitchforks out, don’t take this to mean that there won’t be any mods for Battlefield 3. Despite the fact that DICE has no plans to release any official mod tools, experienced modders will undoubtedly be hard at work proving DICE wrong just as soon as the game ships later this year – just without any official tools.

What do you think of this? Is DICE vastly underestimating the PC modding community? How much does official mod support matter to you? Let us know!
