Free Comic Book Day 2014 To Offer Up 60 Different Titles

Free Comic Book day is coming on May 3rd and with it comes the excitement of million of comic book enthusiasts and shop owners alike.

The day is exactly what it sounds like, with million of colorful books being given away to anyone who visits the local shop. The Maryland Community News points out this is actually the 14th annual Free Comic Book Day and that alone hints at the success of this particular event.

The giveaway occurs on the first Saturday of May, making it the 3rd this particular year. Some lucky comic book fans are not only going to get to pick out roughly 60 different titles that are totally free, but will also get to meet some luminaries in this particular world.

Free Comic Book Day tends to have a couple of of issues that are specially printed for the event and most are viewed as a way to get people into the door of their local shop. The intent is to get people to get their hands on free books and then buy a few extra while they are looking around.

Among the comic books being offered up for free on the day of the event are some promotional materials leading up to the release of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

Marvel is putting out Guardians of the Galaxy and Rocket Racoon‘s special editions. For its part, IDW is celebrating Free Comic Book Day with a Transformers vs. G.I. Joe. Dark Horse is set to release a free Avatar: The Last Airbender comic book.

There are other books, for those who aren’t into the superhero type stories, and those who are too young to enjoy them there are also titles like Scrooge McDuck, SpongeBob SquarePants and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

While some of these are shorter versions of regular printings, one free comic book being offered is an Archie title that has more than 100 pages.

Business Wire reports that more than 4.6 million comics will be given away when all is said and done. While there isn’t an estimation of just how well sales will go on May 3rd, there’s a reason these shops are willing to take part in the event.

Free Comic Book Day is built to not only appeal to people who are already fans of these books, but also to bring in people who may discover there is something for them, thereby growing new fans.
