Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Kylie, Kendall Jenner: A ‘Mean Girls’ For Our Time

For Selena Gomez: the Instagram bell has tolled. Justin Bieber has ‘unfollowed’ the pop princess, and it appears Jelena is officially over. For now. Amid rumors of racy Kylie Jenner texts, accusations, and very probable, impending underwear shots of Kendall and Justin; the 10th anniversary of ‘Mean Girls’ finds its natural descendants.

Justin Bieber has ‘unfollowed’ Selena Gomez on Instagram. Before October 2010, the month and year the photo and video-sharing social networking site launched we wouldn’t have been able to say that.

But for all the trappings of technology, the meaning of Bieber’s ‘unfollow’ is as old as the hills – or, more specifically – a school like the wicked imaginings of screenplay writer Tina Fey’s Mean Girls (2004).

Of the movies’ multiple messages, ‘Be true to yourself,’ ‘Don’t eat your emotions,’ ‘Makeover scenes always work,’ the film struck a massive box office chord ($129 million plus) with its mix of funny (Clueless) meets harsh (Heathers) resonance and recognition of the enduring Law of the Playground: Who’s in, who’s out? You’re out, watch out.

Bieber’s ‘unfollow’ is better understood after recalling Gomez’s radiant-with-rage ‘unfollowing’ of Kylie and Kendall Jenner last week, after spending three, fateful days with the sisters at Coachella. Bieber joined her on Day 3 when he performed onstage with MC pal Chance The Rapper.

There was no mistaking the targets of Selena’s wrath. The “Come & Get It” singer deleted all photographic trace of the Jenners from her account, save for one snap which included other gal pals.

After that, Gomez unfollowed Taylor Swift, Bieber, and everyone else on her Instagram feed.

She also uploaded moody snaps of herself along with a screenshot of Mary J. Blige’s 2007 song “Work in Progress,” which sings of what it says on the tin.

From the mix of contradictory reports, claims, and PR that followed since Gomez’s Instagram purge, two things stand out:

1) That “flirting” may well have taken place between Justin and Kylie and perhaps Kendall or other girl (s); and 2) Selena’s acute sense of betrayal.

Truth be told I actually empathize with Gomez, who takes a turn at playing Lindsay Lohan’s “Cady Heron” character in the Coachella/High School social situation that clearly went south at some point on Sunday, April 13.

After seemingly cutting ties with those who disapproved of Justin — such as her parents who Gomez dropped as managers last month, and Taylor Swift who has been so open about her dislike of Bieber — it was Selena who offered solace to Justin after his Miami deposition.

It was Gomez who has showed that she still cared for Justin despite numerous breakups and his very active sex life when they separated. And after publicly coming out in Texas by way of dance videos amid later news of a duet, the couple also met up in Miami, Coachella then recently in Hollywood.

For Jelena devotees, or anyone observing the Bieber and Gomez relationship, it seems odd and bizarre that Justin would allegedly flirt in front of his girlfriend at Coachella and perhaps Selena did have a “paranoid meltdown,” just as the Jenners described when they responded (via TMZ) to a Gomez-source’s claim that they were “toxic distractions.”

But unless Gomez is crazy, a high-profile (and historically reticent) person doesn’t unfollow everyone they know on Instagram and reveal their hurt so publicly unless they probably have been. The starlet is likely also embarrassed she burned bridges over her Biebs reunion.

The long and the short of whatever went down at Coachella — and presumably after finding no support from Kendall (who is, of course, the “Regina George” in the group) — is Selena is no longer “in” with the Jenners (the Plastics) and has reportedly ended her romance with Bieber.

Hollywood Life reports a source said of Bieber and Gomez, “On the Justin front, they’re broken up.”

Meanwhile, Radar online is reporting Selena lost the plot after allegedly finding racy texts from Kylie on Justin’s cell.

A source told the outlet: “Selena flipped out and there was a huge fight between the girls. She now wants nothing to do with Kylie or [her sister] Kendall.”

The insider purportedly added: “Selena was also furious at Justin. They’re not together right now.”

In contrast, Us Weekly reports that although the Jenners were allegedly flirting with Justin and his crew at a party at Bieber’s rented pad and things “got messy,” Gomez has forgiven them.

A source said, “Selena has no issues with the Jenner girls. They had an issue but they have cleared it up. She has always liked the Jenner girls. They had been fans of Selena since they were young.”

Whichever version you may believe, after the dramas of last week and this, it’s clear a public Instagram unfollow has become the “Burn Book” of our time. Whoever the Mean Girls in the Bieber, Gomez, Jenners falling out are — the hymn sheet reads “no issues,” no alarms.
