10-Year-Old Pot Dealer Nabbed For $11 Sale On Fourth-Grade Playground

A 10-year-old was caught dealing pot at an elementary school in Greeley, Colorado, earlier this week, in a sale that brought the fourth-grader an extra $11 in his pocket, and what will likely be some serious discipline from the school district.

The incident took place Monday at Monfort Elementary school when a 10-year-old who apparently swiped some marijuana from his grandparents brought it in to school and sold it to some fellow 10-year-olds.

The grandparents owned the pot legally in Colorado where recreational marijuana use and sale is now permitted by law. But the state’s legal pot laws don’t apply to fourth-graders.

The very next day, another 10-year-old brought in edible marijuana, who also took the pot from grandparents, in the form of candy and attempted to swap it for the loose pot brought to school Monday by the original 10-year-old pot dealer.

In total, four fourth grade students were involved in the pot transactions, said the school’s safety director John Gates — three boys and a girl. The whole scheme came to light when a teacher overheard some suspicious conversation on the school playground.

Gates said one of the boys took a bite of the pot candy, but a subsequent medical exam showed no negative health effects.

“It was very small, what an adult would say is a bite of a candy bar, maybe. And the young man ate about half of it, so (he) took a small bite,” said Gates.

As for the original 10-year-old pot dealer, apparently he was no criminal mastermind, just a kid who thought he was getting away with something.

“He doesn’t really know why he brought it to school. He took it from grandma, took it to school, decided to sell it, made a small profit,” said Gates, who put the amount pocketed by the 10-year-old drug dealer at $11.

Though marijuana is legal for adults in Colorado, authorities say that with children around, the grown-ups need to take special care to make sure that their pot supply is secure from prying little hands.

“We hope to send a good message here without ruining anybody’s lives. The message we really want to get out here to the adults is, ‘for crying out loud, secure it,'” Gates said.

The 10-year-old pot dealer and the other three fourth-graders will not be suspended or expelled, though they will face what Gates said would be strict discipline — though he would not specify what measures would be taken against the marijuana-happy kids.
