Ex-Blue Angels Leader Gregory McWherther Allegedly Encouraged Sexually Explicit Humor And Hazing

An ex-Blue Angels leader, Capt. Gregory McWherther, has been accused of allowing, and in some cases even encouraging, sexually explicit humor and lewd comments among members of his team.

The U.S. Navy released some details regarding the complaint filed against McWherther, who has been relieved of his duties as executive officer at Naval Base Coronado in San Diego where he was in charge.

The allegations relate to two separate stints, between 2008 and 2012, when McWherther was the Blue Angels’ leader. The statement from the Navy alleges that he: “tolerated an inappropriate work environment within the squadron which may have violated the Navy’s sexual harassment, hazing and equal opportunity policies.”

The statement continues: “The complaint alleges that lewd speech, inappropriate comments, and sexually explicit humor were allowed in the workplace and in some case encouraged by the commanding officer,” and that “pornographic images were displayed in the workplace and shared in electronic communications.”

Vice Admiral David Buss, the commander of the Naval Air Forces spoke about how Navy leaders are expected to adhere to the highest standards of professionalism:

“All Navy leaders, whether assigned to a highly visible unit like the ‘Blues,’ or to our installations, squadrons, ships and submarines, are held to the highest standards. The Navy expects everyone, from those officers in command positions to sailors on the waterfront, to provide principled and highly ethical leadership, stressing discipline, accountability, and the importance of treating shipmates with dignity and respect,” he said.

The Navy added that the Blue Angels themselves are continuing as usual with their training and no changes have been made as yet to their performance schedule. Capt. McWherther served as commanding officer of the Blue Angels from November 2008 to November 2010, and then from May 2011 to November 2012.

It remains to be seen what further action, if any, will be taken against the ex-Blue Angels leader as authorities investigate the allegations made against him.
