On Thursday afternoon, news reports surfaced that San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick could possibly be under investigation for the sexual assault of a woman after a wild night in Miami. As first reported byTMZ.com, and later confirmed by the Miami Police Department, the young QB could be facing some legal woes surrounding this incident.
According to the filed report, the investigation is still in the early stages. At this time, no one has been charged with a crime, and Kaepernick has yet to admit any involvement in the alleged incident.
Miami Police spokesman Rene Pimental said Thursday, "There's no evidence of a crime or a sexual assault. This report is simply an incident report taken at the woman's request."
Kaepernick's team is following the incident closely. "The 49ers organization is aware of a report regarding Colin Kaepernick and are gathering facts," said 49ers general manager Trent Baalke, in a statement to Sports Illustrated.
Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee also reported that 49ers wide receiver Quinton Patton and Seahawks wideout Ricardo Lockette are also under investigation for sexual assault stemming from the same case.
According to information obtained by Matt Barrows, the alleged incident occurred April 1, 2014, when a woman (whose name was redacted from the statement) familiar with Kaepernick went to Lockette's Miami apartment around 9 p.m., where both parties were joined by Kaepernick and Patton. The woman made the players drinks, served shots, and was ordered "to drink the shots" and take a "hit from a bong which contained marijuana," according to the report.
The report further specifies that sometime in the evening the woman felt light headed and went to a bedroom where she was later joined by Kaepernick, 26, with whom she had a sexual relationship in the past. Kaepernick allegedly left the room prior to engaging in any sexual activity with the woman, but the report stated that Patton, 23, and Lockette, 27, peeked inside the bedroom and the woman yelled at them to get out.
The following morning the woman reportedly woke up in a hospital bed, unaware of how she arrived or the previous evening's activities. She reported the occurrence to the authorities two days later on April 3rd.
Kaepernick has had two stellar seasons with the San Francisco 49ers and is perceived as one of the leagues fastest rising stars and most lethal quarterbacks.
Last month, the 49er organization announced they were hoping to lock Kaepernick into a long-term extension before the start of this year's training camp. With the investigation looming and accusations surrounding his involvement with a sexual crime distorting his character, it will be interesting to see how the 49ers front office reacts during contract negotiations.
Colin Kaepernick is currently set to make a $973,000 base salary in 2014 as part of his rookie deal.
