How I Met Your Mother Fans React To Series Finale
Fans of the hit TV series How I Met Your Mother (HIMYM) were not overly excited about the series finale. The How I Met Your Mother finale aired Monday, March 31st. In spite of the outcome of backlash regarding the ending, this How I Met Your Mother episode, according to Nationalpost.com, was HIMYM‘s highest rated show with 12.9 million viewers tuning in.
How I Met Your Mother, which aired for a total of nine years from September 19, 2005 to March 31, 2014 per Wikipedia.com. The creators, Craig Thomas and Carter Bays, developed a great theme for HIMYM. The show revolves around the main character, Ted Mosby, who in the year 2030 is recounting to his children the years that lead up to him meeting their mother. This includes the stories, basically each episode, of Ted surrounded by his friends in Manhattan.
The main cast consisted of Josh Radnor, Jason Segel, Cobie Smulders, Neal Patrick Harris and Alyson Hannigan. The cast, although some emotions were felt at the ending of the show, overall seemed pleased with the way How I Met Your Mother ended. Cobie Smulders was reported by USMagazine.com by saying, “I am very happy how it all ties up. The coolest thing about the finale is that there’s scenes within this episode that were shot during the pilot of our show nine years ago. It’s amazing how we’ve been able to come full circle. Also, we get to jump into the future — we get to twenty years in the future to see where these characters end up.”
However, many fans, according to Nationalpost.com, were so upset by the ending that an online petition was started. The petition had over eight thousand signatures and was sent to the producers asking them to change the How I Met Your Mother ending. Co-creator and executive producer responded per Hollywoodlife.com by saying, “If you didn’t like the finale, I guess that happens. We tried something and it didn’t connect with you. I hope we’re still friends.”
Warning! Spoiler: What upset the fans so much, according to TVGuide.com, about the HIMYM finale was discovering that the Mother (Cristin Milioti) did, in fact, marry Ted, but later died. In the end, Ted wanted his children’s blessing as he reunited with his former love, Robin. Evidently, this was too much for the die hard fans of HIMYM to sink in. A Youtube video was made by fans with the alternate ending they preferred, and although it went viral, it was recently removed from the site.
Creators Bay and Thomas are very clever and truly appreciate the following of their fans over the past nine years. Hollywoodlife.com reports that Bay revealed on Twitter, “Sixteen days ago today we were in the HIMYM edit room, trying to decide between two very different endings” Carter revealed on Twitter.com, “We only shot one script, but through edit room magic we had two possible outcomes for the series.”
Although they stand by the How I Met Your Mother ending which aired on the finale, the alternate ending will be included in the DVD box set which will be released in the fall of 2014 according to Hollywoodlife.com. Fans may not have gotten exactly what they wanted from the How I Met Your Mother official series finale, but at least they will have the opportunity to see the alternate. If only there could be alternate endings in real life.
