Scarlett Johansson Goes Superhuman In First Trailer For Luc Besson’s ‘Lucy’ [Video]

When it comes to buttkicking females, Scarlett Johansson usually comes to mind due to her role as the Black Widow in the Avengers films, but in this first trailer for Luc Besson’s sci-fi flick Lucy, she reaches a whole new level of superhuman.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Scarlett’s character Lucy is a woman working for the mob in futuristic Taipei, Taiwan when her employers insert a bag of drugs into her stomach for delivery. After being assaulted, the bag in her stomach breaks and begins to leak the drug into her system. Lucy begins to feel the effects of the drug, which activates her brain function at a much higher level.

Alongside Scarlett is Morgan Freeman, who plays Professor Norman, a man seen lecturing about the potential a human brain has for extraordinary things. When Johansson’s Lucy contacts him, he tells her that she has the potential to unlock secrets “beyond our universe.”

While the film is no doubt fitting with Johansson in the lead, the character does seem to bear similarities to Besson’s 1997 film The Fifth Element, in which a woman who is described as the “perfect human” shows abilities Lucy has such as super speed reading, superior fighting skills, and the ability to pick up entire languages within minutes or hours.

The LA Times reports that Scarlett Johansson will soon re-join her Avengers castmates to begin filming her scenes for next year’s Avengers: Age of Ultron.

What do you think about the trailer? Does it look like a great summer sci-fi action flick or does Scarlett Johansson just seem like she’s playing Leeloo Dallas Multipass 2.0?

Lucy will hit theaters on August 8, 2014.
