Meet The Gionee Elife S5.5, The World’s Slimmest Phone!

Gionee, the Chinese mobile phone manufacturer earlier this week announced the launch of its newest Android powered handset, the Gionee Elife S5.5 in India. Claimed to be the slimmest phone in the world, the Gionee Elife S5.5 measures just 5.5mm across. The launch event was monumental in itself, with many considering this the biggest phone launch India has ever seen. Over 1000 people – including Gionee India’s distributors, journalists and bloggers were flown in to the tropical paradise of Goa by Gionee. The launch events spanned three days.

Let us now take a look at the specifications and other details pertaining to the Gionee Elife S5.5

The Design

The Gionee Elife S5.5 is the thinnest phone in the world. Period. Measuring just 5.5 mm across, it is the thickness (or the lack of it) that lends this handset its name. Made of glass and metal, the phone exudes quality and at times, feels surreal owing to its thinness. That said, some people might not prefer the overall glossiness of the handset.

The Hardware

The Gionee Elife S5.5 is powered by an Octa Core processor which has not been revealed by the company. In all likelihood, however, this is the Mediatek MT 6592 chipset that houses a 2 Ghz processor (scaled down to 1.7 Ghz in the case of the S5.5). This chip also integrates a Mali 400 GPU that is capable of handling most games of today. There is 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory which thanks to the phone’s slim profile, cannot be expanded further.

The Display

Measuring five-inches across, the Gionee Elife S5.5’s display certainly won’t turn heads because of its ubiquitous size. However, being an AMOLED display, it is as vibrant as a display could get. The S 5.5 also gets a Gorilla Glass 3 coating for scratchproof-ness.

The Camera

As with most other Gionee handsets, the camera boasts of a high megapixel count on the Gionee Elife S5.5 as well. This phone gets a 13 megapixel, AF main camera, LED flash and the capability to capture full HD videos. The five megapixel front camera gets an ultra-wide angle lens and is tailor made for selfie freaks.

The Software

The Gionee Elife S5.5 runs Android 4.2.2 under its own heavily customized Amigo OS 2.0. While I have not been a great fan of Amigo, Gionee claims to have made improvements to this latest edition of the software. At this point it is unclear if the S5.5 will get an upgrade to KitKat soon. This is an area of concern for Gionee which has been releasing great handsets – but has been slow when it came to updates.

Price and Launch Date

The Gionee Elife S5.5 will be available across India starting April 27, 2014. The phone has already been launched in China and would be launched across a wide range of markets across Asia. In India, the device has been priced at Rs.23,999 which is almost equal to the price of the 16 GB version of Gionee’s flagship, the Elife E7. We will be reviewing the Elife S5.5 in detail as soon as we get the handset with us. Also, look out for the detailed review of the Gionee Elife E7 coming up soon here on The Inquisitr!
