Elton John Celebrates Legalization of Gay Marriage In UK

Music phenom Elton John, known for such classics as Rocket Man, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, and I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues, to name a few, has a new reason to celebrate. The UK has recently legalized gay marriage, allowing same-sex couples such as Elton John and his partner, David Furnish, the chance to honor their commitment with more than just a ceremony. Many are celebrating by getting married as soon as possible. United Kingdom Prime Minister David Cameron encouraged same-sex couples in a tweet that stated, “Congratulations to the gay couples who have already been married – and my best wishes to those about to be on this historic day.”

Elton John and his partner have been together for more than 20 years. They have adopted two sons, Zachary, who is three, and one-year-old Elijah. In 2005, John and Furnish were one of the first gay couples to enter into a civil partnership. Says John’s soon-to-be-husband, “As something of a showman, [Elton] is aware that whatever he says and does, people will sit up and take notice – so what better way to celebrate that historic moment in time. Our big day made the news, it was all over the internet within minutes of happening and front page news the next day.”

According to Attitude magazine’s Love & Marriage special, David Furnish had this to say about the new marriage laws: “Elton and I will marry – as a high-profile couple, we feel it is our duty to do it, to make sure that everyone knows that this is something that many gay men living in this country never dreamed would happen. Elton and I both think there is a massive difference between calling someone your ‘partner’ and calling them your ‘husband’. ‘Partner’ is such an impersonal word and doesn’t adequately describe the love we have for each other.”

The love and caring that Elton John’s partner holds for their two boys was evident as he spoke about what this new legalization means for them as a family. “When Zachary and Elijah are grown up and having children of their own, they will – hopefully – be living in a world where everyone can be equal, when being married isn’t about whether you’re straight or gay, but simply about being human.”

This is a an exciting time for all same-sex relationships like that of Furnish and Elton John, who wish to solidify their commitment with a legal marriage. Stay tuned for more news about Sir Elton John’s upcoming nuptials.
